Flowers for people with Alzheimers

We, at MV Florist have the privilege of making and delivering vase arrangements to every Windemere Nursing Home Resident on their Birthday. There is a Dementia Unit there at Windemere. What I have been told by the children of parents with Alzheimers disease is that their loved ones really seem to recognize the color Red especially with other BRIGHT colors. We always try to make the Dementia Unit's patients' vases extra bright. I also notice in my trips to Windemere that many older people adore yellow roses. Flowers are good for the heart and the soul.

Bare Branch Lighted Tree

The pictures tell the story. Cut down a sapling in winter. Cement it into a mache bucket, put it in a pot and light it up. (Black and white photo copyrighted by Kristen Leigh Conklin photography.)

Talking To Space

Well, "First Blog" didn't go too well. I got caught in a net of back arrows. This is a test for me. I have a Facebook Page and a Twitter account for my business http://www.mvflorist.com/ and now a blog. I'm doing it to raise my rank on Google. I don't expect anyone to follow me except of course for my two sisters who are the best and would subscribe to anything if they thought it would help me.
So as for this not to be a total waste I will use it as a place where I talk about challenges I face in the Florist business and how I solved them (or tried to).
A new challenge we face for weddings is making a  bare branch tree out of branches or an actual small tree I cut down.  Transporting it to and from venues means putting it in a sturdy but movable pot that can fit in my Van. So it needs to stay firmly in a container but not be too heavy. Of course it needs to be lighted with white Christmas lights so either hiding an electric line or finding the best and longest string of battery operated lights is part of this. This is the challenge I will write about in the next Blog.
Your Island Florist,
Ellen
